Cool, wet Burnaby mornings fog the inside of the windshield, and film from the dash, vents, and hands turns that fog into a smear. What to wipe, and when an interior detail helps.
Late October in Burnaby, you start the car and the inside of the windshield clouds over. The defroster clears a patch that still looks smeared, and a sleeve wipe turns that smear into a wider streak.
Here's what that fog and the smear usually are, a five-minute check, what to wipe at home, and when an interior detail cleans the inside of the glass. Mats are in our fall floor-mat note. The outside of the glass, and windshield ceramic, are in the rainy-night windshield note. This one is the inside.
Why the inside fogs on a cool wet morning
The windshield is colder than the damp air in the cabin, so moisture lands on the inside.
- Cold glass. After a wet night, or a night in a concrete parkade, the windshield sits near the outside temperature. Warm cabin air meets it and condenses.
- A damp cabin. Rain on a jacket, wet shoes, a mat left in the footwell, and breath on a short drive keep putting moisture into the air. The glass often fogs again at the next start.
- Recirculate. It holds that damp air in. Defrost with the air conditioning on, and fresh air rather than recirculate, usually pulls the moisture down. The heater warms the glass. It does not dry the mat.
Fog on clean glass usually lifts once the glass warms. A patch that stays hazy is moisture sitting on a film.
The film that turns fog into a smear
The smear is usually a thin film you do not see at noon. Fog makes it obvious.
- Off-gassing. Vinyl, plastic trim, and a dash that heats up and then cools often leave a faint film on the glass over weeks.
- The vents. Defroster air blows across the lower windshield. Dust and that film often collect in a band in line with the vents, and on the side glass beside a vent.
- Hands and sleeves. A sleeve, a used towel, or the cloth that just wiped the dash moves skin oil onto the glass. The next fog traces those strokes.
- Dashboard dressing. Overspray leaves a slick patch. Fog beads on it instead of clearing in a sheet.
On filmed glass, that moisture streaks and comes back the next cool morning.
Damp carpets keep feeding the fog
A driver's mat that stays wet keeps the footwell air damp, and overnight that moisture rises onto the cold glass. Knocking shoes off, and pulling a wet mat out to dry, is in the fall floor-mat note. Clean glass with a soaked mat still in place usually fogs again the next morning.
A five-minute check on the inside of the glass
Engine off, in daylight or under a parkade light. Use a clean microfibre kept only for glass.
- Sight along the inside. Look toward the grey sky or a streetlight. A cloudy band low on the glass, in line with the vents, is usually film.
- Wipe one small square. Inside only. If it looks clearer than the glass around it, the haze is inside.
- Breathe on the square and beside it. Clean glass fogs evenly and clears. Filmed glass fogs in streaks.
- Check the outside of that patch. Grease or a wiper arc means part of the smear is outside. The rainy-night windshield note covers that side.
- Run the defroster for a minute. Moisture usually lifts. A streak that stays on warm glass is film. No airflow is a mechanic's job, not a detail.
This locates the haze. It is not a safety check.
What to wipe between visits
- Two cloths, glass only. A barely damp microfibre, then a dry one. Keep both off the dash. A dripping cloth runs into the vents.
- Skip the sleeve. Skin oil is how the streaks get their shape.
- Go easy on household window spray. It often leaves its own film, and a run can mark the dash. Mist the cloth, not the glass.
- Keep dressing off the glass. A dash cloth stays off the windshield.
- Air the footwell. Pull a soaked mat out under cover. On the drive, use defrost with the air conditioning on, and leave recirculate off.
Home wiping does not lift a season of film.
What an interior detail does for the glass
We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Interior detailing in Burnaby and Vancouver uses the inside packages on the mobile detailing page.
- Interior Refresh starts at $155, about an hour, GST extra. Interior glass is included with the vacuum, mats, and the rest of the cabin wipe.
- Interior Deep Clean starts at $260, about 2.5 hours, GST extra. Everything in Interior Refresh, plus steam and a deeper clean of the mats and seats, when damp carpet is feeding the fog.
- Essential Detail starts at $210, about two hours, GST extra. Interior glass plus a hand wash, so both sides of the windshield get cleaned.
Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil starts at $50, GST extra, when mud is past a normal vacuum. We do not dry a flooded cabin, repair a leak or a chip, or fix a defroster with no airflow.
Windshield ceramic is $99, GST extra, on the outside of the front glass after a wash. It does not clean the inside. System X is a paint coating, a drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy with a 24-hour cure, on the ceramic coating page.
If heavy rain or extreme weather would affect the quality of an exterior wash, we'll contact you to reschedule. Light rain is usually fine for interior work. We need room beside the car and permission to be there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice. Tight stalls are on condo parkade detailing.
A maintenance plan interior visit includes glass with the vacuuming, wiping, and an odour refresh. Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Pause or cancel anytime by call or text. Those rates are quoted.

Quick answers
Why does it fog on the inside?
The windshield is colder than the damp cabin air, so moisture lands on the inside.
Why does the clear patch still smear?
Defrost usually lifts moisture. Film from the dash, the vents, and hands makes that moisture streak.
Will windshield ceramic clean the inside?
No. The $99 add-on is the outside of the front glass, after a wash.
Can you do this in the rain or a parkade?
Light rain is usually fine for interior work. A stall needs permission and room beside the car.
How to book the interior glass visit
- Note whether the haze is inside, outside, or both, and whether a mat is still wet in the morning.
- Choose Interior Refresh for the film, or Interior Deep Clean if the mats are holding moisture. Add heavy soil only if mud is past a normal vacuum.
- Book online, or compare packages on interior detailing and mobile detailing.
- Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether the car is at home, at work, or in a condo stall.
Clear the inside of the glass before the evenings get darker
On November 1 the clocks go back, and many Lower Mainland drives finish in the dark. A filmed windshield that looks faintly smeared at noon is harder to see through once headlights and wet pavement are the light you have.
