Late October rain leaves a greasy haze on Metro Vancouver windshields just as evenings get darker. What a mobile glass clean and windshield ceramic add-on do for wet night commutes.
Late October in Metro Vancouver is a wet commute that is about to become a night commute. On November 1 the clocks go back, so the drive home that used to finish in dusk now finishes in the dark. Highway 1, the Port Mann, and wet streets through Burnaby and Vancouver throw spray onto the glass the whole way. A windshield that looks fine at noon can turn milky when streetlights and headlights hit the film.
Here's what that haze and the wiper chatter usually mean, a short test at home, what a mobile exterior visit does for the glass, and when a windshield or exterior glass ceramic add-on is worth adding. It is not a promise about stopping distance, and it does not replace worn blades or careful driving.
Why the windshield looks worse after dark
Daylight hides a thin film. At night, light hits the glass from a low angle and the spray shows up.
- Darker evenings. After November 1, many Lower Mainland drives home happen in full dark.
- Road spray, not a rinse. Rain does not wash a windshield the way a hose does. Tires keep laying fine dirt on the glass.
- Short dry breaks. Film sits damp, dries into a smear, then the next shower wets the smear instead of lifting it.
- Glare. Headlights and wet-pavement reflections scatter in that film.
Greasy road film and wiper chatter
Fall film on a windshield is rarely mud. It is exhaust, oil mist, and fine grit that rain keeps wet, so the glass feels slick and the blades skate.
- Chatter and skip. The blade hops in one band of the wipe instead of laying a clean edge.
- A smeared arc. One pass clears a stripe, and the return drags the film back.
- A faint colour sheen. Streetlight can show a little colour in the oil. That is contamination, not a coating wearing off.
- Film on the glass comes off with a proper clean. A new blade still drags until it is gone.
- A worn blade chatters on clean glass too. We do not sell wiper blades. If the glass is clean and the skip remains, replace the blade before you book a coating.
Inside film is separate. A dry microfibre kept for glass clears most of a cabin haze. Heavier film is an interior detail, not an exterior coating.
A five-minute glass self-test
Do this with the engine off, using a clean glass cloth and a little water.
- Sight along the glass. From a front corner, look toward a streetlight or the grey sky. Film shows as a cloudy band in the wiper arc.
- Feel a small patch. A greasy drag means film. Loose grit should wash off. A chip or crack is a glass-shop job.
- Wipe, then wet. Clean a palm-sized square and mist it. Clean glass beads or runs off. Filmed glass smears and hangs.
- Listen once in the rain. Chatter on that clean patch points to the blade. Quiet only there means the rest of the glass still has film.
- Wipe an inside corner. If it looks clearer in headlights, the haze is inside. Exterior ceramic will not fix that side. That locates the haze. It is not a safety check.
What mobile exterior services do for the glass
The visit comes to you. The unit brings water and power, and we set up at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Exterior detailing in Burnaby and Vancouver uses the outside packages on the mobile detailing page. Glass is a step in those packages, not its own booking.
- Supreme Wash (starting at $135, about an hour, GST extra) is the maintenance hand wash, and exterior glass is part of it.
- Decon & Protect (starting at $240, about two hours, GST extra) is that wash plus iron remover and clay for paint that still feels rough. Clay is for the paint. The glass is cleaned because the wash is included.
- A combo such as Essential Detail also wipes interior glass when film is on both sides.
A wash removes today's film. It does not leave a beading layer, and ceramic only goes on glass that is already clean. Heavy rain means we reschedule an exterior visit. Light rain is usually fine for interior work. We need room beside the car and permission to be there, which is practical guidance, not legal advice. See condo parkade detailing if the stall is tight.
Windshield ceramic and exterior glass ceramic
After the clean, two mobile add-ons treat the outside of the glass. Each is $99, GST extra.
- Windshield Ceramic Coating is the front glass you look through.
- Exterior Glass Ceramic Coating is the side glass and the rear window.
The windshield alone covers a dark commute. Add the second coating if the side and rear glass should shed spray too.
What it is for:
- Beading. Spray sits up or lets go, instead of drying into a new smear, and the next wash has less to grip.
- Clean glass only. Ceramic over grease seals the haze in. We wash, then coat.
What it is not:
- Not a safety product. It does not shorten a stop, replace a wiper, or make a wet night safer.
- Not chip repair, and not headlights. Cracks go to a glass shop. Cloudy lenses are plastic, restored in-shop at 4399 Lougheed Hwy and quoted after we see them. See headlight restoration.
- Not System X, and not wheel ceramic. Multi-year paint coatings are a studio drop-off with a 24-hour cure, on the ceramic coating page. Wheel-face ceramic is a separate $99 add-on for the rims.
We do not publish a lifespan. When beading stops, clean the glass and apply it again.
Which visit matches the glass
| Goal | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Filmed exterior glass on a normal cycle | Supreme Wash, starting at $135 |
| Rough paint, with glass cleaned in the wash | Decon & Protect, starting at $240 |
| Film on the inside of the windshield | Interior glass on a combo or an interior detail |
| Beading on a clean windshield | Windshield Ceramic Coating, $99 |
| Beading on the side and rear glass | Exterior Glass Ceramic Coating, $99 |
| Cloudy headlight lenses | In-shop headlight restoration, quote only |
GST is extra. A wash and a glass coating can share one mobile visit when the weather allows. System X and headlight restoration stay a studio drop-off in Burnaby.
Quick answers
Does fall rain rinse the windshield clean?
No. It adds spray, and the greasy film is still there when the headlights come on.
Will windshield ceramic stop wiper chatter?
Only chatter from film, after a clean. A worn blade still skips, and that blade is yours to replace.
Can you coat the glass in the rain?
We come to you, and we move the visit if heavy rain would spoil it. A parkade can work. An open driveway in a downpour usually waits.
Do I need both glass add-ons?
No. The windshield coating covers the night commute. Side and rear glass is the optional second add-on, $99 each, GST extra.
Is this the same booking as a shop coating?
No. Glass add-ons are mobile. System X on the paint is a Burnaby drop-off with a cure window.
How to book a glass-focused visit
- Do the self-test and note whether the haze is outside, inside, or both.
- Choose the wash or combo that cleans that glass, and add one or both coatings if you want beading after.
- Book online, or compare packages on our mobile detailing page. Mention the glass add-on so we plan the time.
- Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether it is a driveway, a workplace, or a condo stall.
Clear the glass before the evenings get darker
The rain is already here, and on November 1 the commute gets darker with it. A clean windshield, blades that meet the glass, and windshield ceramic if you want the spray to bead are the practical steps. They do not drive the car for you.
Book a mobile wash, compare packages and the glass add-ons on our mobile detailing page, or call (604) 360-9813 Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
