Wet Burnaby commutes throw road spray onto the covers under the hood. What that film is, a five-minute look, and when a $75 engine bay detail belongs on a mobile visit.
Late October in Burnaby, the paint can look rinsed while the bay under the hood does not. A wet commute throws a fine spray up from the road, and a week of that leaves a tan film on the plastic covers you see when you open the latch to top up the washer fluid.
Here's what that film usually is, a five-minute look with the engine off and cool, and when an engine bay detail is the right add-on. Leaves in the door jambs are in our fall sill note. The rockers and the underside, before winter brine, are in our brine note. This one is the bay with the hood up.
Where a wet commute leaves film under the hood
Road spray does not stop at the rocker. Some of it rides into the gaps at the front of the car and settles where you only look when something needs checking.
- The plastic cover. A pale dusty film that looks dull after a few wet-dry days, even when the hood paint looks washed.
- The cowl edge. Leaves and needles where the hood meets the windshield. A wet leaf sticks, and the plastic under it stays damp.
- Lids and caps. The washer cap and the fuse-box cover pick up the same dust.
- A dark oily patch. A sheen that smears, or a drip on a hose, is a leak. We clean film. We do not find or repair one.
Why the bay looks worse after a rainy week
- Damp dust sticks. Dry dust brushes off. Dust that landed wet grabs the plastic and stays.
- A short dry spell sets it. Sun between showers dries the film in place. The next rain wets the hood and leaves the cover looking the same.
- Leaves hold moisture. A mat of wet leaves in a corner keeps that plastic damp after the street has dried.
- It is not brake dust. Brown film on the wheel faces is a different job, in our brake dust guide.
- It is not winter brine. Late October on Burnaby streets is still rain and ordinary road film. Winter road treatment has not started.
A five-minute look with the hood up
Do this in daylight, engine off and cool, on level ground. Do not lean on a fan, a belt, or a connector.
- Sight the plastic cover. A tan haze that comes off on a dry finger is road film. A smear that feels oily is not.
- Check the corners. Leaves, needles, and grit along the inner lip are the usual catch after a wet commute week.
- Look at the caps. A dusty washer cap is normal. A cracked cap, or fluid that is simply low, is a parts or top-up job.
- Leave the connectors alone. Do not tug a plug or aim a hose into the bay. Water in a connector is how a wipe turns into a no-start.
- Note a warning light or a drip. That is a mechanic. Book the clean after the leak is sorted.
What to do between visits
- Lift dry leaves by hand once the engine is cool. Do not drag a stuck wet leaf across the paint at the cowl.
- Skip the pressure washer. Keep a household nozzle off the bay and off connectors.
- Wipe the cover only when it is cool. A dry microfibre takes loose dust. It will not lift film that has dried on.
- Keep household degreaser out. Strong spray can mark the plastic, and overspray lands on belts and painted edges.
- Top up washer fluid on its own. A full reservoir does not rinse the cover.
What an engine bay detail is
We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Exterior detailing in Burnaby and Vancouver uses the outside packages on the mobile detailing page. The bay is an add-on, not a line inside those washes.
Engine Bay Detail is $75, GST extra. Mention it when you book. It cleans the road film and loose debris on the covers you can see with the hood up.
What it is not:
- Not an inspection or a repair. We do not read codes, test a battery, or trace a leak. A cracked cap and an oily drip stay with a shop.
- Not rustproofing. We do not oil a frame. The brine note is the rockers and the panels we reach from beside the car.
- Not a paint coating. System X is a drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy, with a 24-hour cure, on the ceramic coating page. We are an authorized System X installer. A bay clean does not coat paint, wheels, or glass.
- Not a dry-out. If water has reached the intake, say so before you book. We clean rainy-season film.
Pair it with a Supreme Wash (starting at $135, about an hour) or Decon & Protect (starting at $240, about two hours). Packed wells are Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil, starting at $50. GST is extra. That $50 is the wells, not the bay.
Weather, the hood, and where we can work
The hood stays open, so this is exterior work. If heavy rain or extreme weather would affect the quality of an exterior wash, we'll contact you to reschedule. Light rain is usually fine for interior work.
We need room beside the car, clearance for the hood, and permission to be there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice. A low ceiling means the driveway. Tight stalls are on condo parkade detailing.
A maintenance plan can put the exterior on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly visit. Pause or cancel anytime by call or text. Plan rates are quoted, and the bay add-on is still something you ask for.
Which visit matches the bay
| Goal | Best fit |
|---|---|
| Tan film on the plastic covers | Engine Bay Detail, $75 |
| Filmed paint as well as a dusty bay | Supreme Wash, starting at $135, plus the bay |
| Paint that still feels rough | Decon & Protect, starting at $240, plus the bay |
| Packed wheel wells | Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil, starting at $50 |
| An oily drip or a warning light | A mechanic, not a detail |
| Multi-year protection on the paint | In-shop System X, not a bay clean |
GST is extra. The $75 figure is the listed price, not a starting-at range. Wash prices are starting prices and depend on the vehicle.
Quick answers
Is the engine bay included in a wash?
No. It is $75, GST extra, and only if you ask for it.
Will this find a leak or clear a warning light?
No. We clean film on the covers. Leaks, codes, and a weak battery are not a detail.
Is winter salt already under the hood?
No. This is late-October rain and ordinary road spray. Winter treatment has not started.
Can you do this in the rain or a parkade?
We move an exterior visit when heavy rain would spoil the work. A stall needs permission, room beside the car, and height for the hood.
Is this the wheel guide or the rocker guide?
Wheels are the brake-dust post. Rockers are the brine post. This one is the bay with the hood up.
How to book the bay with the wash
- With the engine cool, note whether the cover is dusty or whether you can see an oily drip.
- Book a Supreme Wash, or Decon & Protect if the paint feels rough, and add Engine Bay Detail.
- Compare packages on mobile detailing before you confirm.
- Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether the hood can open where the car is parked.
Clean the covers before the wet weeks stack up
November starts this weekend. The hood hides this film, so it is easy to leave until spring. The add-on is a small part of a wash you may already want after a wet Burnaby week.
