Wet fall leaves and grit hide in door jambs, sills, wheel wells and the cowl. Here's a five-minute fall check for Vancouver drivers, and which mobile detail cleans the gaps.
Every October, Metro Vancouver's trees let go at once. Maples, oaks and birches drop their leaves onto driveways, parking stalls and street-parked cars, and then the rain glues them in place. Most of that mess washes off the roof and hood on its own. The leaves you don't see are the ones that matter: the ones packed into the gaps of your car.
Here's where fall debris hides, why it's worth clearing out before the wet months settle in, and how a mobile detail at your home or workplace takes care of the gaps a quick rinse misses.
Where leaves and grit collect on your car
Open a door after a week of fall rain and you'll usually find some of it right there. The usual hiding spots:
- Door jambs. The painted frame you see when the door is open. Leaves, pine needles and gritty water slide in every time you open the door in the rain and sit along the edges and hinges.
- Door sills. The bottom of the door opening that your shoes cross on the way in and out. Wet grit and leaf bits pile up here and get ground in by every step.
- Wheel wells. Wet leaves stick to the inner wheel liners along with road spray and grime.
- The cowl. The panel at the base of the windshield, under the wipers. Leaves fall in here and stay there.
- Hood and trunk channels. The gutters around the edges of the hood and trunk or hatch opening, where leaves and needles wash down and settle.
None of these spots gets much help from rain or a drive-through rinse. Water runs over the top of the debris instead of carrying it away.
Why it's worth clearing out now
Wet leaves hold water. A clump of soggy leaves acts like a sponge pressed against paint, seams and rubber seals, and in a Vancouver fall it rarely gets a chance to dry out. Moisture held against your car for weeks isn't doing it any favours.
Leaves can leave marks. As wet leaves break down, they can leave brown, tea-coloured marks behind, especially on lighter paint and in the paler painted areas inside the door openings.
Grit wears at the door opening. Every time the door closes on a gritty jamb or sill, that grit gets pressed against the paint and the rubber seal. Over a full wet season, it adds up.
Debris can block drainage. The cowl and many sunroofs have drains meant to carry rainwater away. When leaves pile up, water has fewer places to go.
It's the first thing passengers see. You open the door, and before anyone notices the paint, they see a jamb full of mulch.
A five-minute fall check you can do yourself
You don't need any special tools to stay ahead of it between details:
- Open every door, the trunk and the hatch. Pick out loose leaves and needles from the jambs and sills by hand, then wipe away loose grit with a damp microfibre cloth kept for this job.
- Lift the hood and look at the cowl. Clear leaves you can reach easily. Don't force anything apart or poke tools into vents.
- Check the hood and trunk channels. A quick wipe along the edges stops leaves from building up into a damp clump.
- Pay attention to drains. If you notice water pooling at the base of the windshield, damp carpet you can't explain, or water around the sunroof, check your owner's manual or ask your dealer about clearing the drains.
- Park smart when you can. If you have the choice, avoid parking directly under the heaviest-dropping trees for days on end, especially before a big rain.
That routine keeps the worst of it out. A proper wash takes care of the grime that's already worked into the jambs and sills.
Which mobile detail cleans the gaps
We come to you at home or at work, and our units are self-contained with onboard water and power, so you don't need to supply a hose or an outlet. Door jambs are part of two packages on our mobile detailing page.

Prices on our site are starting prices and GST is extra. Your final price depends on your vehicle's size and condition, so check the mobile detailing page for current packages and add-ons.
If your paint also feels rough after a few weeks of fall driving, our Decon & Protect package goes a step further with iron and fallout removal and a clay bar treatment. You'll find it on the same page.
What about the weather?
Fall is busy for us precisely because of the rain, and we plan around it. We watch the forecast, and if heavy rain or extreme weather would affect the quality of the job, we'll contact you to reschedule.
To make the visit easy, park somewhere we can open every door fully and work around the vehicle, like a driveway, a carport, or a stall with space on both sides. Detailing at your workplace works too, as long as the property allows a mobile unit and there's room to park beside your car.
Clear out the gaps before winter
