Before the First Brine: Paint and Underbody Prep in Burnaby

Supreme Shine Team · · 7 min read

Lower door, rocker panel, and clean wheel well of a dark crossover on a damp grey October day in Burnaby, with rain sheen on the pavement

Late October is the window before Burnaby and North Shore roads get winter brine. What that spray does to lower doors, wheel wells, and the underbody, plus a simple protection plan.

Late October in Burnaby is still a rain season. The first cold snaps are ahead, and with them the winter road treatment on the North Shore climbs, the mountain parkways, and then the city streets. The hood can look ordinary while the rockers, the door bottoms, and the wheel wells are what that spray will sit on.

Here's what road brine does, why those lower areas take the hit, a five-minute driveway check, and a simple plan to clean and protect the paint before the first treatment. Winter salt is not on Burnaby streets as we write this. We wash and protect paint. We do not spray oil on a frame.

What road brine does

Brine is salt mixed into water and put down so it stays on the pavement. Rain runs off. Brine is meant to cling, and the tire throws it back as a fine spray.

  • It stays damp. Salt holds moisture, so a splash on the rocker sits wet instead of drying into harmless dust.
  • Bare metal is where rust starts. A chip down to steel, a brake line, exhaust, and untreated underbody metal are what road salt attacks. Clear coat is a different surface.
  • Paint collects a film. The spray dries into a pale, gritty line on the door bottom and behind the wheel. Bonded film can etch. There is no safe number of days worth inventing.
  • The splash is low. The roof sees rain. The rocker, the wheel arch, and the underside see the tire.

Why lower doors and wheel wells take the hit

At speed the tire throws dirty water into the arch and along the door bottoms. You see a speckled band behind the front wheel, and grit in the well that rain does not rinse out.

  • The rocker stays wet longer. A chip there stays damp after the hood has dried.
  • The well holds grit. Sand in the arch lip turns into a paste on the next wet drive.
  • Door bottoms share that line. Water runs to the edge and sits in the seam.
  • Mountain routes meet treatment first. North Shore and mountain drives see that spray before a car that stays on flat Burnaby streets. We are not quoting a city schedule.

Once treatment has started, rinse the lower doors and wells with plain water from a normal distance, then dry the door edges. Keep the nozzle off connectors and the engine bay.

A five-minute splash-zone check

Do this in daylight, on level ground, with the engine off.

  1. Sight the rocker. A chalky or brown line along the bottom edge is film, not a factory stripe.
  2. Feel the arch lip. Grit that stays under a finger is packed in the well.
  3. Find the spray line. A speckled band behind the front wheel is where the tire has been aiming.
  4. Check one chip. Bare metal is a body-shop touch-up before any coating. We do not repair paint chips.
  5. Glance under the nose, safely. A crust of old dirt means the lower panels need a wash. It is not a verdict on the frame.

What a mobile wash covers, and what it does not

We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Exterior detailing in Burnaby uses the outside packages on the mobile detailing page. Wheels, tires, and wells are part of those washes. They are not a separate chassis service.

  • Supreme Wash (starting at $135, about an hour, GST extra) resets the splash zone: pre-soak, hand wash, wells, door jambs, and paint protection.
  • Decon & Protect (starting at $240, about two hours, GST extra) adds iron remover, clay, and deeper wheel cleaning when the lower paint still feels rough.
  • Gloss Enhancement (starting at $365, about 3.5 hours, GST extra) adds a light machine pass and a 6-month ceramic sealant.

Wheel Face Ceramic Coating is $99 when you want clean faces to bead. Brake dust on those faces is a different job, in our brake dust and wheel-face guide. Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil starts at $50 if the wells are packed. Exterior Trim Restoration is $50 for chalky lower cladding. Add-ons are GST extra.

  • Not rustproofing, and not a hoist inspection. We do not spray oil or rubberized coating on a frame. We wash from beside the car.
  • Not chip repair. Bare metal belongs with a body shop.

If heavy rain would affect an exterior wash, we will contact you to reschedule. Light rain is usually fine for interior work. We need room beside the car and permission to be there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice.

Protection for the paint before the first cold snap

Sealant and ceramic go on clean paint. Over road film, they lock the mark in.

Gloss Enhancement puts a 6-month ceramic sealant on the panels during the mobile visit. It is not System X, and it does not coat the underside.

System X is a drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy with a 24-hour cure. We are an authorized System X installer. Every package includes warranty registration and CARFAX registration. Tiers on the ceramic coating page start at $1,099 for 3 years, $1,299 for 6 years, and $1,599 for 10 years. It bonds to clear coat, sheds water, and resists chemical stains. The 6-year tier lists enhanced chemical resistance. It does not cover bare metal or the frame. Request a coating quote and leave a day for the cure.

Correct etched lower panels before any coating. Paint correction starts at $525 at the studio. We quote the stage after we see the paint. Anything through the clear coat is a body-shop repair.

A maintenance plan keeps the splash zone rinsed once brine season starts: weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Pause or cancel anytime by call or text. Rates are quoted. Choosing a cadence is covered in our bi-weekly plan before the wet months.

Quick answers

Is winter brine already on Burnaby roads?

No. Late October is the window before the first cold snaps and before winter treatment.

Will ceramic coating stop underbody rust?

No. It protects clear coat. We do not oil-coat frames or brake lines.

Do you wash the wheel wells?

Yes. Exterior packages include wheels, tires, and wells, washed from beside the car.

Can I rinse the lower panels myself?

Yes. Plain water from a normal distance, then dry the door edges. Keep the nozzle off connectors and vents.

Is this the brake-dust wheel visit?

No. That guide is brake dust on the faces. This one is the spray line on rockers, wells, and the underside.

How to book the prep visit

  1. Do the splash-zone check and note whether the rocker feels rough or only looks filmed.
  2. Book a Supreme Wash, or Decon & Protect if the lower paint is rough.
  3. For multi-year protection, request a System X quote and leave a day for the 24-hour cure at 4399 Lougheed Hwy.
  4. Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether it is at home, at work, or in a condo stall.

Get the lower panels clean before the first brine

Clean the rockers, door bottoms, and wheel wells while the film is still fall dirt. Then choose a sealant, a studio coating, or a maintenance rhythm before the first treatment.

Book a mobile wash, compare packages on our mobile detailing page, or call (604) 360-9813 Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
