Chalky Black Trim Before Burnaby's First Frost

Supreme Shine Team · · 7 min read

Chalky light-grey lower cladding and wheel-arch trim on a dark crossover parked on a wet, leaf-strewn street during a grey rainy October day in Metro Vancouver

Weeks of Burnaby rain leave black plastic trim grey and gritty. A five-minute look, what a wash leaves behind, and when the $50 trim add-on belongs on a mobile visit.

Late October in Burnaby, rain can leave the paint looking rinsed while the black plastic does not. Arches, the lower bumper, and the strip along the rocker pick up grit, and that plastic often looks grey beside paint that still reads dark when it is wet.

Here's what that greying usually is, a five-minute look you can do in daylight, and when Exterior Trim Restoration belongs on a mobile visit. Leaves in the door openings are in our fall sill note. Brake dust on the wheel faces is in our wheel guide. This one is the unpainted plastic.

Where a wet month shows on the trim

Rain does not treat every black surface the same. The pieces that go grey first are the ones that face the road.

  • Wheel-arch cladding. Textured plastic around the tire catches spray and whatever was wiped onto the sidewall.
  • The lower bumper. The corners sit in the same spray as the rockers. A pale haze shows once the panel dries.
  • Unpainted rocker trim. The narrow strip under the doors. A drive-through rinse mostly skips it.
  • Mirror caps. Smooth black plastic that looked glossy in September can look dusty after a wet commute week.
  • A cracked piece. A split arch or a loose clip is a parts job. We do not replace a broken panel.

Why the plastic looks worse after weeks of rain

  • Grit stays in the texture. Water runs over the peaks. The grain holds a tan film that looks like fade until you touch it.
  • A dry spell sets it. Wind between showers dries that film in place. The next rain wets the paint and leaves the plastic looking the same.
  • Chalk is not dirt. A hidden edge that is still black, beside a grey face, has faded. Rain will not put the colour back.
  • Tire dressing migrates. Sidewall dressing smears onto the arch, turns brown-grey, and grabs more dust.
  • It is not brake dust. Brown film on the wheel face is a different job.
  • It is not winter brine. Late October here is still rain and ordinary road film. Winter road treatment has not started.

A five-minute trim check

Do this in daylight, on level ground, with the car cool. You do not need the hood open.

  1. Wipe one spot. A damp microfibre that lifts a tan smear, and plastic that goes darker, means film. Plastic that stays grey is chalk.
  2. Compare a hidden edge. The inner lip of the arch often stays darker. A grey face beside that edge is fade, not a missed rinse.
  3. Feel the texture. Loose grit rolls under a fingertip. A greasy coat is usually tire dressing off the sidewall.
  4. Check the bumper corners. They show a pale edge before the hood does.
  5. Note a split or a loose clip. That is a parts job. Sort it before you book a restore.

What to do between visits

  1. Rinse loose grit before you wipe. A dry cloth on sandy texture scuffs the grain.
  2. Keep tire dressing on the tire. If it lands on the arch, wipe it the same day. Left on, it holds dust.
  3. Skip bleach and strong solvent. They can stain the plastic or leave a streak the next shower does not lift.
  4. Do not scrub with an abrasive sponge. A cut texture looks worse in wet light than chalk does.
  5. Leave greasy dressing off faded trim. It can look dark for an afternoon, then streak in the rain and grab grit.

These steps slow a new film. They do not bring chalked plastic back to the colour of a hidden edge.

What a wash does, and what the trim add-on is

We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Exterior detailing in Burnaby and Vancouver uses the outside packages on the mobile detailing page. Ceramic coating and paint correction stay a drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy.

Supreme Wash starts at $135, about an hour, GST extra. It includes a hand wash, wheels, tires and wells, door jambs, glass, tire dressing, and paint protection. It clears loose film. It does not restore chalk.

Exterior Trim Restoration is $50, GST extra. Mention it when you book. It is for exterior plastic that still looks grey once the grit is gone, and it is not a line inside the wash.

What it is not:

  • Not paint correction. In-shop only, starting at $525, for painted panels on the paint correction page.
  • Not a System X coating. In-shop only, with a 24-hour cure. We are an authorized System X installer. Tiers and warranty registration are on the ceramic coating page.
  • Not clay. Clay Bar & Paint Decontamination is $75, GST extra, for paint. Decon & Protect, starting at $240, about two hours, GST extra, adds iron remover and clay when the paint feels rough.
  • Not a parts swap. Cracked cladding and a missing clip stay with a body shop.
  • Not brine prep. Lower paint and the wells are in our brine note.

Packed wells are Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil, starting at $50, GST extra. That $50 is the wells, not the trim.

Weather, access, and a maintenance rhythm

Trim work rides with the exterior wash. If heavy rain or extreme weather would affect the quality of an exterior wash, we'll contact you to reschedule. Light rain is usually fine for interior work.

We need room beside the car and permission to be there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice. Tight stalls are on condo parkade detailing.

A maintenance plan can put the exterior on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly visit. Pause or cancel anytime by call or text. Plan rates are quoted. Ask for the trim add-on when the plastic has gone chalky.

Quick answers

Does a Supreme Wash restore faded trim?

No. The wash clears film, jambs, wheels, and glass. Chalky plastic is the $50 Exterior Trim Restoration add-on.

Can I blacken it with tire dressing?

Dressing belongs on the tire. On textured trim it goes greasy, holds grit, and streaks in the next rain.

Is winter salt already on the plastic?

No. This is late-October rain and ordinary road film. Winter road treatment has not started.

Can you do the trim in the rain or a parkade?

We move an exterior visit when heavy rain would spoil the work. A stall needs permission and room beside the car.

How to book the trim with the wash

  1. In daylight, note whether the plastic wipes darker or stays grey, and whether any piece is cracked.
  2. Book a Supreme Wash, or Decon & Protect if the paint feels rough, and add Exterior Trim Restoration.
  3. Compare packages on mobile detailing before you confirm.
  4. Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether we can work beside the car at home, at work, or in a stall.

Reset the grey plastic before the nights get colder

November starts this weekend. The paint can look fine in the rain while the arches stay grey. Ask for the trim add-on on the wash you already want after a wet Burnaby month.

Book a mobile wash, compare packages on our mobile detailing page, or call (604) 360-9813 Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
