Wet leaves left on a car through rainy Vancouver nights can leave tannin stains and faint etching, especially on lighter paint. What a wash can lift, and when a mark may need correction.
A maple leaf on the hood looks harmless until it sits there. Late October in Metro Vancouver is a run of rainy nights, and a leaf that lands in the evening is often still there in the morning, soaked flat against the paint. Rain does not peel it off. It keeps it wet.
Here's what that brown outline usually means, how to lift a wet leaf without scratching, what a wash or decontamination can take off, and when the shape needs paint correction. Leaves packed into door jambs are a separate job, in our door jambs and sills check. This one is the paint you can see.
Why a wet leaf stains the paint
A fallen leaf still holds tannins, the compounds that turn tea brown. Kept damp against the clear coat, they sit in a film of water. Wind would blow the leaf off. A rainy Vancouver night in late October keeps it there.
- Rain glues it flat. Water slips under the edges. It does not wash the stain away.
- The panel stays wet overnight. The leaf does not dry, curl, and fall off before the morning commute.
- Light paint shows the mark first. White, silver, and pale grey make a brown leaf shape obvious. Darker colours can hide the same mark in grey light.
- Bare clear coat holds the water. A ceramic coating makes water bead, so the leaf has less of a wet seal. It is not immunity.
A single night may leave only a faint shape. Several wet days make a mark that survives a wipe more likely. There is no safe number of hours.
- Surface colour sits on the clear coat, like a tea stain in the leaf's shape. A wash, sometimes with decontamination, can lift it.
- An etch is a dull outline in the clear coat. Washing cleans around it. Polishing is what may level it.
Harder scrubbing does not fix an etch. It scratches the paint next to the mark.
How to lift a wet leaf without scratching
Grit sits under the leaf. Dragging it across the panel, or wiping it dry, sands the paint.
- Soak, then wait. Mist the leaf and the paint with plain water. Do not use hot water on a cold panel.
- Lift, don't slide. Use the stem or a free edge. Soak again if it tears. Nails, cards, and ice scrapers mark clear coat.
- Rinse the grit off before a cloth touches the paint. A dry towel on a wet leaf is how swirls start.
- Blot once. A clean damp microfibre is enough. Stop if a brown shape remains. Skip household powders, magic erasers, and toothpaste.
- Check the roof, trunk, and fenders. Soak any dry leaf there until it softens, then peel it.
A five-minute outline check
Do this in daylight once one leaf is off and the panel is rinsed.
- Sight along the paint. In grey light, a leftover stain shows as a leaf-shaped shadow.
- Wipe once with a damp microfibre. If the brown lightens, it is still on the surface. If the shape looks unchanged, stop.
- Do not spot-polish it. A hardware-store compound on one patch can leave a bright island that shows more than the stain.
- Take a photo in flat light. It helps us tell a wash from a correction before you book.
What a wash or decon can lift
We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. The outside packages are on the mobile detailing page. Exterior detailing in Burnaby is that same visit.
- Supreme Wash (starting at $135, about an hour, GST extra) is a hand wash that clears loose leaves and surface colour. It does not polish an etch.
- Decon & Protect (starting at $240, about two hours, GST extra) adds iron remover and clay. Clay can lift some bonded tannin film. It will not remove every outline.
- Gloss Enhancement (starting at $365, about 3.5 hours, GST extra) adds a machine pass for gloss and light swirls, and a 6-month ceramic sealant. It may ease a faint haze. A crisp leaf outline after decon is a studio question, not a result we promise from the van.
Heavy rain means we reschedule the exterior work. Light rain is usually fine inside. We need room beside the car and permission to work there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice.
When the outline needs paint correction
A leaf shape that survives the wash and the clay is likely in the clear coat. Machine polishing can level that spot so the outline stops reading as a dull patch. That is a drop-off at the Burnaby studio, 4399 Lougheed Hwy, not a service from the van.
Paint correction starts at $525. We quote the stage after we see the paint. Single-stage, two-stage, and three-stage work are different depths of polishing. Some marks will not come out. Anything through the clear coat is a body-shop repair, and we will say so before polishing starts.
Correct the paint before any coating. A coating over an outline locks the stain in place. That order is the subject of paint correction before ceramic coating.
Ceramic coating and a wash schedule for leaf season
System X ceramic coating is in-shop only, with a 24-hour cure. We are an authorized System X installer, and every package includes warranty registration and CARFAX registration. Tiers on the ceramic coating page start at $1,099 for 3 years, $1,299 for 6 years, and $1,599 for 10 years. Beading means a loose leaf is less likely to stay plastered overnight. A leaf left for days can still mark coated paint. Request a coating quote after the stain is dealt with.
A maintenance plan is the mobile side. Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly visits mean a wet leaf is less likely to spend a week on the hood. Pause or cancel by call or text. Plans are quoted, with no published flat rate, on the maintenance plan page.

Quick answers
Will the rain wash a leaf stain off?
No. The rain is what holds the leaf against the paint.
Are these marks only on white cars?
They show first on light paint. Dark colours can carry the same etch and hide it.
Will ceramic coating prevent leaf stains?
It helps debris release. It does not make paint immune, and it should not cover a stain you want removed.
Is this the door-jamb leaf problem?
No. Jambs, sills, and the cowl are the fall gap check. This is the outside paint.
How to book the right visit
- Lift the leaves while they are wet, then do the outline check.
- If the colour wipes off, or the leaves are still on the car, book a Supreme Wash or Decon & Protect on the mobile detailing page.
- If the shape remains, request a paint correction quote and send the photo. Drop the car at the Burnaby studio.
- After the paint is clean, ask about System X, or a maintenance plan, for the rest of leaf season.
Get the leaves off the paint this week
One rainy night is usually a wash. A week of wet leaves can leave a shape in the clear coat. Soak the leaf, lift it, and match the visit to what is left.
If the outline remains, request a quote for paint correction at the Burnaby studio, 4399 Lougheed Hwy. If the leaves are still on the car, book a mobile wash and compare packages on our mobile detailing page. Call (604) 360-9813 Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
