Paint Correction Before Ceramic Coating in Vancouver

Ceramic coating locks in whatever is under it — including swirls. Here's how single-, two- and three-stage paint correction at our Burnaby studio prepares paint for System X.

Booking a ceramic coating without fixing the paint underneath is a common mistake. System X bonds to whatever is on the clear coat when it goes on. If that surface is full of wash swirls, haze or water spots, the coating locks them in under a glossy layer that can last for years.

Here's what paint correction does, how the three stages differ, and why both jobs happen at our Burnaby studio.

Ceramic coating locks in what's underneath

A ceramic coating is a hard, hydrophobic layer that chemically bonds to the clear coat. That bond gives you the slick feel, water beading and easier washes — and why the surface has to be right first.

Anything left on or in the clear coat when the coating goes on stays visible under it:

  • Wash swirls and light scratches from automatic washes or dirty towels
  • Water spots and etching from mineral-heavy rain or sprinklers
  • Oxidation and dullness on older or neglected paint
  • Holograms from a poor previous polish

Once System X is levelled and curing, those marks are sealed in. You can still wash the car, but you cannot polish through a hardened ceramic layer the way you polish bare clear coat.

That is why our paint correction page and our ceramic coating page both say the same thing: correction before coating gives the clearest base for the coating to bond to.

What paint correction actually removes

Paint correction is machine polishing of the clear coat. Using graded pads and compounds, we remove a controlled amount of clear coat so the defects sitting in that layer come out with it.

We can usually improve or remove light and moderate swirl marks, holograms and haze, water spots in the clear coat, oxidation that has dulled the gloss, and many fine scratches that have not gone through the clear coat.

We cannot fully remove scratches that have cut through the clear coat into the colour coat or primer, or deep chips and scrapes. Those can often be softened so they catch less light, but they are not gone without bodywork — and we do not do bodywork. The paint assessment maps what is realistic before polishing starts.

The corrected finish itself is permanent: the defects are physically removed from the clear coat. Without a sealant or ceramic coating afterward, new swirls and water spots will form again as you wash and drive.

Single-stage, two-stage and three-stage

A newer daily driver with light wash marring needs a different plan from an older car that has sat outside through Lower Mainland winters. We use three correction levels at the shop.

Single-stage is one machine-polishing pass after wash and decontamination. It targets light swirls, minor holograms and light oxidation, and restores gloss. A finishing sealant goes on if you are not coating the same visit. Typical time is about 3 to 5 hours. It is often enough for newer paint, or as the prep included with certain System X tiers when the clear coat is already in good shape.

Two-stage (most popular) adds a compounding pass before the finishing polish. That reaches deeper scratches, heavier water spotting and thicker oxidation. Most Metro Vancouver daily drivers sit between "a few swirls" and "heavily neglected," which is why two-stage is our usual recommendation. Plan on a full day or more at the studio.

Three-stage is maximum correction: heavy compounding, an intermediate polish, then an ultra-fine finish. It is for heavy defects where two stages will not get the clarity you want. It takes the longest and removes the most clear coat, so we recommend it only when paint thickness and condition support it.

Exact pricing depends on the vehicle, paint condition and stage. We quote after the assessment rather than publishing package prices on the paint correction page. Request a paint correction quote with your year, make and model and we will walk you through the right level.

Why this is a shop drop-off

Paint correction needs controlled lighting and a clean, dust-free room. Under poor light you miss holograms and leftover haze. Outdoors, grit lands in the polish and becomes new scratches. Fall moisture interferes with compounds and pads.

That is why correction — like System X — is done at our studio at 4399 Lougheed Hwy, Burnaby, not from the van. You drop the car off; we work panel by panel; you pick it up when the job is finished and inspected.

Mobile detailing still covers washing, decontamination and interior work at your home or workplace. The machine correction itself stays indoors.

How correction pairs with System X tiers

Every System X tier includes some paint prep. From our ceramic coating page (starting prices, plus GST; final pricing depends on your vehicle and paint condition):

TierStarting atPrep included
3-Year System X$1,099Single-stage paint prep
6-Year System X (most popular)$1,299Single-stage machine polish
10-Year System X$1,599Everything in the 6-Year

For many cars with light defects, that included prep is enough. Heavier swirling, dullness or etching may need additional correction beyond the tier, quoted separately so you know the full scope before we start. Older vehicles or paint in poor condition are handled the same way.

After the coating is applied, it cures over 24 hours. Do not plan to drive straight into rain or a dirty commute the moment the car leaves the bay — we will go over timing and aftercare at drop-off.

Ceramic coating is not scratch-proof. System X adds hardness and helps resist light wash marring, but grit dragged across the paint can still mark it. Good washing habits still matter.

A simple decision path

  1. Look at the paint in direct sun or under bright lights. Swirls, haze or water spots mean correction will change how the car looks before any coating goes on.
  2. Decide how long you want protection to last. A finishing sealant after correction is shorter-term. System X (3-, 6- or 10-year) is the longer shop option.
  3. Budget time for a drop-off. Single-stage can fit in a half day; two-stage often needs a full day. Coating adds the cure window on top.
  4. Tell us the year, make, model and what bothers you most. We assess clear-coat thickness and defect depth, then recommend a stage and whether coating the same visit makes sense.

You do not have to decide the stage yourself. That is what the assessment is for.

Quick answers

Do I need paint correction before ceramic coating?

In most cases, yes. Coating locks in whatever is underneath. At least a single-stage prep is recommended so System X bonds to clear, corrected paint.

Will correction remove every scratch?

It removes most light and moderate defects in the clear coat. Scratches that go through the clear coat cannot be fully removed without repainting.

Can you correct the paint at my house?

No. Correction needs controlled lighting and a dust-free environment, so it is done at the Burnaby studio.

How long does it take?

Single-stage typically takes 3 to 5 hours. Two-stage can take a full day or more. Three-stage takes longer and is quoted after we see the paint.

Book correction (and coating) at the Burnaby studio

If you want your paint corrected before System X goes on — or corrected and sealed if you are not coating yet — request a paint correction quote and tell us your vehicle and what you see in the paint. Prefer to start with the coating tier and let us recommend prep? Use the ceramic coating quote form instead.
