Heated Seats and Damp Leather on Cool Burnaby Mornings

Cooler Burnaby mornings put heated seats on leather still damp from rain clothes. What to wipe at home, and when a leather clean or seat coating is the right mobile visit.

Late October in Burnaby, the morning is cool enough that the heated seat comes on before the cabin is warm. The leather under you was still damp from yesterday's rain pants, or from a jacket left on the cushion overnight. A minute later one part of the seat feels hot and the seam beside it still feels cool.

Here's what that heat does to damp leather, a five-minute check at home, what to wipe between visits, and when a leather add-on belongs on a mobile interior detail. Wet shoes and the front mats are in our fall floor-mat note. Jackets and boots in the hatch are in the rain-gear note. This one is the seat.

Where the damp sits on a leather seat

Water from clothes does not stay as a puddle. It sits where you actually sit.

  • The driver's cushion. Wet pants sit here for the commute. The centre often darkens before the edges.
  • The outer bolster. A hip in a soaked shell presses water into the side the next person does not notice.
  • Seams and perforations. Stitching, and the small holes in some leather, hold water after the flat panel feels dry.
  • The other cushions. A rain shell, a school bag, or a coat in the back leaves a patch that stays hidden until someone sits there. Take a towel inside after the drive.

What the heated seat does to that moisture

The heater is for a cool morning. It is not a dryer, and it is not a cleaner.

  • A darker patch that stays. Heat moves moisture in the grain. The colour can stay uneven after the cabin has warmed up.
  • A stiff seam. A seam that dries under the heater can feel hard along the stitch, while the panel beside it still feels soft.
  • A smell from the cushion. The odour is moisture in the seat, not dirt on top. The next cold start brings it up with the heater.
  • Nothing cleaned. Dust, skin oils, and a little road film from clothing stay in the grain. Heat does not lift them.

A seat that stays cold is a heater problem. We clean and condition leather. We do not repair it.

A five-minute leather check

Do this in daylight, engine off, driver's door open. Leave the heater off until the last step.

  1. Look across the cushion. A patch darker than the bolster beside it is usually moisture or oils, not a shadow.
  2. Press a seam. A cool line that stays compressed is holding water. A dry seam springs back.
  3. Check the bolster where your hip sits. The centre can look fine while that side does not.
  4. Look at the other cushions if a jacket or a bag rides there.
  5. Air the door, then turn the heated seat on for a minute. A stale smell is in the cushion. A seat that stays cold is a mechanic's job, not a detail.

Habits that keep damp leather from setting

  1. Change out of soaked clothes, or put a dry towel down and take it inside when you park.
  2. Wipe, do not soak. A barely damp microfibre, then a dry one. A dripping cloth pushes water into the seam.
  3. Skip household sprays. Glass cleaner, baby wipes, and tire or dash dressing can mark leather.
  4. Leave the heated seat off until the cushion feels dry. Heat on a damp seat sets a dark patch and a stiff seam.
  5. Air the door under cover. Blot a mark. Do not scrub it.

These steps slow the next wet week. They do not condition leather that has gone stiff.

Clean, condition, or coat

On a visit these stay separate, and only the ones you ask for get added.

  • A wipe is already in the interior packages. Seats are cleaned and wiped. That takes the loose film. It is not the conditioning add-on.
  • Leather Cleaning & Conditioning is $50, GST extra, and only if you ask. The interior detailing page says leather is not part of the package unless you request it.
  • Leather Ceramic Coating is $50 per seat, GST extra, on leather that has been cleaned first. It is not System X, and it is not the paint coating done as a drop-off at the Burnaby studio. We do not publish a lifespan for it.

We do not publish a repair or recolour price. Tears and a dead heater are not a detail. If the seats are cloth, or only look like leather, say so when you book.

What a mobile interior visit does

We come to the car with water and power on board, at home, at work, or in a parkade that allows it. Interior detailing in Burnaby and Vancouver uses the inside packages on the mobile detailing page. Paint ceramic coating and paint correction stay a drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy.

Interior Refresh starts at $155, about an hour. Interior Deep Clean starts at $260, about 2.5 hours. Essential Detail starts at $210, about two hours, and adds a hand wash. GST is extra, and leather conditioning is extra on all three. We do not dry out a flooded seat. Excessive Dirt / Heavy Soil starts at $50, GST extra, when mud is past a normal vacuum.

If heavy rain or extreme weather would affect the quality of an exterior wash, we'll contact you to reschedule. Light rain is usually fine for interior work. We need room beside the car and permission to be there. That is practical guidance, not legal advice. Tight stalls are on condo parkade detailing.

A maintenance plan interior visit includes leather conditioning when needed, with vacuuming, wiping, glass, and an odour refresh. Weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly. Pause or cancel anytime by call or text. Those rates are quoted.

Quick answers

Will the heated seat dry the leather?

It warms the cushion. Running it on a damp seat is how a dark patch sets.

Is leather conditioning included?

No. It is $50, GST extra, and only if you ask. The package wipes the seats.

Is leather ceramic the same as a paint coating?

No. It is $50 per seat on the mobile visit. System X on the paint is a studio drop-off at 4399 Lougheed Hwy. See the ceramic coating page.

Can you fix a tear or a dead heated seat?

No. We clean and condition leather. Tears, dye, and a cold heater are not a detail.

Can you do this in the rain or a parkade?

Light rain is usually fine. A stall needs permission and room beside the car.

How to book the leather visit

  1. Note which seats are leather, which cushions look darker, and whether a heater stays cold.
  2. Choose Interior Refresh or Interior Deep Clean, and add leather conditioning. Add leather ceramic per seat if you want it after the clean.
  3. Book online, or compare packages on interior detailing and mobile detailing. Mention the leather add-on.
  4. Tell us the neighbourhood, the vehicle, and whether it is at home, at work, or in a condo stall.

Get the damp out of the leather this week

Cooler mornings are already here, and the heated seat will be on more often from here into November. Wipe the patch, leave the heater off until the cushion is dry, and match the visit to the seats that need conditioning.
