System X ceramic coating needs a clean, dry, controlled space and a 24-hour cure. Here's why it's done at our Burnaby studio, and why October is the time to book it.
A common question once the weather turns: "Can you do a ceramic coating in my driveway?" It's a fair one. We do bring the wash, the interior and the decontamination to you. But a System X ceramic coating is the one job we won't do from the van, and in Metro Vancouver's wet season the reasons matter even more.
Here's why a coating has to go on indoors at our Burnaby studio, what the drop-off actually involves, and why October is a smart time to get it done before the rain settles in for months.
A coating bonds to whatever is on the paint when it goes on
System X is a liquid nano-ceramic that chemically bonds to your clear coat and forms a hard, slick, water-repellent layer. That bond is the whole point, and it's also why the conditions around it matter so much.
Whatever is on the surface when the coating goes on gets sealed in. That includes:
- Dust and grit blowing across a driveway or parkade.
- Moisture, from drizzle, mist, or a damp October morning.
- Fallout and road film that a quick wash didn't fully lift.
- Swirls and light scratches already in the clear coat.
Outdoors in the Lower Mainland in fall, you can't control any of the first three. A light shower halfway through, a gust of leaf debris, or heavy morning humidity is enough to leave high spots, streaks or specks locked under a layer that's designed to last years.
That's why our ceramic page says it plainly: System X needs a controlled, dust-free space with proper lighting and temperature, so we apply it in the shop rather than as a mobile service.
What actually happens at the studio
A proper coating is a sequence, not a single step. At the shop it looks like this:
- Inspection. We look closely at your clear coat under good lighting to see what's there: swirls, water spots, oxidation, deeper scratches.
- Decontamination. The paint is washed and clayed so the surface is genuinely clean, not just clean-looking.
- Polishing as needed. Depending on the tier and the paint, this is anywhere from single-stage prep to machine polishing. Older or tired paint may need more correction first, which we quote separately.
- Application. The System X formula goes on panel by panel, is allowed to flash, then is levelled to an even, streak-free layer.
- Cure. The coating cures over 24 hours. This is the part that's easiest to underestimate.
Good lighting is what lets us catch a missed high spot before it hardens. Stable temperature and a dry room are what let the coating flash and level the way it's meant to. Neither is something we can promise on a wet street in October.
The 24-hour cure is why "just coat it outside" doesn't work here
Even if you found a perfectly dry afternoon, the coating still needs time to cure after it's applied. Driving off into a downpour an hour after levelling, or leaving the car parked under a dripping tree overnight, puts water and debris on a surface that hasn't finished setting.
In a Vancouver fall, a dry 24-hour window outdoors is a gamble. Inside the studio, it's simply part of the process. When you book, ask us how long to plan for the drop-off for your vehicle and tier, so you can arrange your week around it.
Why October is the right time to book
Ceramic coating doesn't have a "season," but there's a practical case for doing it now rather than in January:
- Your paint is in better shape now than it will be after months of road film, brake dust and winter grime. Less to remove means a cleaner base.
- Wet months are when a coating earns its keep. A hydrophobic surface sheds rain and spray more easily, and road film has a harder time gripping. Washes are quicker and the car looks cleaner between them.
- The coldest, darkest weeks are the hardest time to keep up with washing, so having that protection on before they arrive makes the most of it.
What a coating won't do is make your car scratch-proof. System X adds hardness and helps resist light swirls and wash marring, but grit dragged across the paint can still mark it. Good washing habits still matter.
Choosing a System X tier
All three coating tiers are applied in the shop. Here's how they compare, using the starting prices listed on our ceramic coating page (plus GST; final pricing depends on your vehicle and paint condition):
| Tier | Starting at | Prep included | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-Year System X | $1,099 | Single-stage paint prep | Newer paint in good shape, solid entry-level protection |
| 6-Year System X (most popular) | $1,299 | Single-stage machine polish | Daily drivers you plan to keep for a while |
| 10-Year System X | $1,599 | Everything in the 6-Year | Long-term owners who want the thickest layer and maximum durability |
If your car already has a ceramic coating, the 1-Year Renewal is a separate shop service: a thorough wash, chemical decontamination and a compatible ceramic maintenance product to bring back gloss and water beading. Pricing depends on the vehicle and the coating's condition.
How long any coating lasts depends on the tier, how it's maintained, and how much the car is exposed to. Washing about every two weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo, staying away from brush-style automatic washes, and applying System X Renew once a year all help it go the distance.
Should the paint be corrected first?
Usually, yes. A coating locks in whatever is underneath it, so swirls and oxidation stay visible under a glossy layer. Every tier includes some level of prep, but if your paint has heavier swirling or dullness, we'll talk through whether a paint correction stage makes sense before the coating goes on. That's also done in the shop, and we'll quote it separately so you know exactly what's involved.
What we can still do at your place this fall
If you're not ready to drop the car off, our mobile detailing packages still come to your home or work with self-contained water and power, from a Supreme Wash to Decon & Protect. Light rain is usually fine for interior work; for heavy rain or extreme weather, we'll reach out to reschedule. It's a good way to keep the car clean through the wet months, and a decontaminated car is a great starting point whenever you decide to book a coating.
Quick answers
Can you apply ceramic coating at my home or office?
No. System X is applied at our Burnaby studio, where we can control dust, moisture, lighting and temperature. Mobile visits cover washing, decontamination and interior work.
Can I drive the car right after it's coated?
The coating cures over 24 hours, so it's best not to expose it to rain or road spray during that window. We'll go over timing and aftercare with you at drop-off.
Will a ceramic coating stop rock chips or scratches?
No. It adds hardness and helps resist light swirls from washing, but it isn't scratch-proof and it doesn't stop chips.
Do I need to wash a coated car differently in the rain?
Wash about every two weeks with a pH-neutral shampoo, avoid brush automatic washes, and use System X Renew once a year. Rain will bead and roll off more easily, but road film still builds and still needs washing off.
Book your coating before the wet months
If you'd like System X on before the rain settles in, request a ceramic coating quote and tell us your vehicle and the tier you're leaning toward. We'll get back to you with pricing and a drop-off time at our studio at 4399 Lougheed Hwy, Burnaby.
Prefer to talk it through? Call us at (604) 360-9813, Monday to Sunday, 8 AM to 8 PM.
